Online education leader HotChalk Inc., along with partners LearnPad Inc. and Concordia University – Portland, made a technology donation to Faubion School, a Title 1 school in Portland, Oregon.
The school, which is deeply committed to student achievement, received 150 LearnPad tablets and the accompanying ClassView software in August 2014.
“The excitement on our middle school students’ faces as we handed out the 1:1 LearnPads made our year! Teaching and learning at Faubion PK-8 is being modified to infuse technology,” said Jennifer McCalley, assistant principal at Faubion. “Students are engaged and motivated to use their LearnPads to explore academics in new ways by using video creation, online peer editing, digital bookmaking and flipped lessons. Thank you HotChalk for helping us close the opportunity gap with our students! Stay tuned as our students become the technology leaders of tomorrow!”
The donation was made as part of the university’s innovative “3 to PhD” effort, a public/private educational collaboration to support learning beginning at 3 years of age and extending through higher education.
Faubion, which represents a diverse community within Portland, has been the recipient of Portland Public Schools Foundation’s “Excellence in Education Award” twice in the last five years and has received the “Sustaining Excellence Award.” The State of Oregon also honored Faubion in 2006 for its efforts to close the student achievement gap.
The LearnPad is a full-featured Android-based tablet that was designed specifically for education and helps teachers meet the challenge of differentiated instruction. The ClassView software gives teachers a way to monitor student tablet activity.
